ARE YOU AN ESL TECH GEEK? FIVE INTERESTING ARTICLES
For many ESL students, learning English out of the classroom has
a very popular and successful way to enhance learning outside of the
classroom. Noted below are five journal articles that discuss this
new wave towards learning English on-line.

Perceptions of Online Learning in the Context of Second Language

This article discusses how ESL students not proficient
English in may do better in-the-classroom. Although
advanced technology has been effective in causing
education to transcend the regular classroom, it
has doesn’t make-up for beginning ELL learning.
Lin, M. (2011). The unrealistic claims for the effects of
classroom blogging on English as a second language, students’
writing performance. British Journal of Educational Technology,

Traditional classroom writing is compared to the
blogging done by ELLs on the web. It appears that
writing skills involve more than just blogging, without
our professional direction.

Writing skills are said to be enhanced by offering
the ELL an opportunity to reach beyond the classroom-
like going on a field trip and enhancing the creative,
visual side of writing. This field trip gives the learner
to build better language skills.

This author discusses how computer technology is universal
and it is the key to broadening ESL programs. Specialized
ESL software is discussed that develops English language
listening, speaking, and reading skills.
Zha, S. (2006). An Investigation of Communicative Competence of
ESL Students Using Electronic Discussion Boards. Journal of
Research on Technology in Education, 38(3), 349-367.
This article was a study done of ESL students
from K-12 grades and explored ESL learning
on Discussion boards in different social and
cultural settings.
